Wigo flat irons are made and distributed by its parent company, Helen of Troy. In fact, you can buy Helen of Troy hair straighteners but you’ll find they’re exactly the same as Wigo. Anyhow, the company occupies the mid-price range of the market. There are those who would say that no appliance under $100 is any good but these people are often professional stylists or those who use one every day and for them buying an expensive, professional model makes sense. But for those who won’t be using one every day, spending up to $150 on one just isn’t a sensible option; far better to buy a good, reliable but cheap brand.

But, is a Wigo flat iron a good, reliable cheap brand?

On the whole, yes however some models represent better value for money than others. The company makes three models of ceramic iron. The first is called the Wigo Professional ceramic iron. The word ‘Professional’ is a misnomer as it’s the cheapest of the lot and couldn’t ever be described as a professional stylist’s iron. It comes with 1″ plates, weighs a comfortable 1.5lbs, has 12 heat variable settings between 280 – 430 degrees Fahrenheit. It also heats up in a respectable 50 seconds, has a 9 foot cord and comes with a good 3 year warranty. It costs around $50.

Many flat iron reviews are less than glowing, however most complain that the 1″ plates didn’t straighten their ‘frizzy, thick hair’ in under 20 minutes! Well, if I had that kind of hair I’d be looking to buy a 2″ version.

Which brings us to the 1 1/2″ and 2 1/4″ versions. They don’t have the prefix of professional but offer exactly the same features of the 1″ version. They cost about an additional $10.

If you’re looking to buy a ceramic flat iron I would advise you to look at another brand; the FHI flat iron (ceramic model) costs around the same and is a better appliance. Many consumer flat iron reviews give it very high praise.

Wigo also make a wet to dry flat iron, called the ‘Damp or Dry’. It retails for around $60 making it quite cheap for this type of hair straightener. You get the same temperature settings of the ceramic versions as well as cord length, heat up time and 3 year warranty. But it does differ in that the plates and grips have been ergonomically designed giving the whole appliance and nice look to it. Some have complained that the grip was anything but ergonomic but I found it to be very easy to use. I would recommend it; it’s certainly better than other cheap versions; the T3 iron would set you back $150 and the Turbo Ions costs around $100.

Finally, the company also makes a tourmaline version. It’s cheap at around $60. I really like this iron. It’s made from titanium making it very light – weighing only 0.5lbs – with the ceramic plates infused with tourmaline. The rest of the features are pretty much the same as the ceramic models. At this price I would recommend it.

In conclusion, I would avoid the ceramic versions – you can find better and for the same money. I would consider the wet to dry model and I would definitely recommend the tourmaline Wigo flat iron.

OK, I am a college student who is looking for some women's shoes that are stylish, yet are comfortable enough to walk around campus in. I am tired of the whole ballet flats and skimmers trend, and I am not too keen on athletic shoes. Do you have any suggestions on what type of shoes I should look at?

Every kind of leather has its own unique tanning and finishing process – however, the exotic leathers that are the most complex to tan are alligator, crocodile and ostrich. Here is an overview of the peculiar high-maintenance differences of these amazing animal skins from standard cowhide leather you should know:

1) Coloring and Finishing – With a high quality tanned hide, some of the finest handiwork is done to create a finished material. The coloring and finishing process will determine the ultimate look and feel of the finished skin. Ostrich skin is very particular and requires very careful coloring and finishing to prevent creating holes in the sensitive pock-marks. Professional tanneries will only use the best quality finishes and dyes for their products.

2) Quality measurements and processing is much different – Cowhide leather can be easily mass-produced with fewer quality measurements. Alligator, crocodile, and ostrich skin require much more maintenance – these exotic sins cannot be processed in large batches, they require extra steps and time, and the maturity rate of the animal is often slower and offers less availability than regular cowhide. Only a truly professional exotic leather tanner can produce a quality hide free of holes, defects, and inconsistencies.

3) Bleaching the Skins – Skins are bleached to remove any existing pigmentation in the skins. This ultimately forms a “crust” which is basically a colorless hide that is ready for tanning and finishing in any Pantone color. Hazardous ingredients are used in this process, which also requires proper ventilation, equipment, storage, and draining tools to do correctly and safely.

4) Liming Procedures are Different – Liming is a process used to remove the outer layer of skin. This process is tricky and must be monitored closely. After liming has commenced for several days, “de-liming” is done with the help of Ammonium Chloride and the chemicals are properly recycled or disposed of. Once this is completed, each crocodile, alligator, or ostrich skin must be carefully clipped.

5) High Maintenance Processing – Only an expert tanner understands the patience and dedication to the craft of leather making to produce a high quality finished hide in crocodile, alligator, or ostrich. Any mistakes in the process can make a perfectly tanned hide an inferior low-grade product. Being an exotic animal (and often a regulated species), skins require tagging and must meet the regulations of the country of origin for inspections.

6) Skins are graded by size – Cowhide leather is much easier to produce than crocodile, alligator, or ostrich and is often sold in large measurements. In contrast, every extra centimeter or inch of an exotic hide increases its value, so a professional tanner will do everything they can to maximize the size, finish, and quality of every square cm/inch of the material and trim the least amount off as possible.

7) Proprietary Tanning and Re-Tanning Process – Each professional tanner has their own “special blend” of tanning ingredients to produce the highest quality luxury skins. Alligator, crocodile, and ostrich hides are no exception, and an experience tanner will use their special tanning sauce to craft the best quality materials. A good tanner also includes an anti-fungal mixture if the skins may be stored for a long period of time to prevent the growth and increase the life of the skins.

Tanning and Finishing chemicals must be precise – Only a professional tanner knows the exact measurements of the chemicals needed to produce a luxury grade exotic skin hide in crocodile, alligator, and ostrich. Whereas cowhide is easy to tan in comparison, mistakes in measurements of tanning chemicals for exotics can ruin an expensive animal hide.

Use these easy-to-follow steps and you can apply eyeliner like a professional make-up artist:

1. Select your eyeliner

An eyeliner must be applied near the base of your eyelashes. Eye liner pencil

The easiest to use, works just like colored pencil. As the tip of this liner is dry, it has a tendency of pulling your eyelids fragile tissues; stretching the eyelids when lining it could help a lot in achieving a smooth application. A note to remember, you should always sharpen the pencil before every application to eliminate any bacteria that has accumulated at the tip.

Permanent eyeliner

This is can be created through cosmetic surgery. This procedure is known as micro pigmentation, a technique that adds a defined line to the lid which with a handheld device used to puncture the skin several times a minute with a very thin needle that pushes color pigments to the position that is desired.

2. Apply the eyeliner

- Begin at the inner corner of your eye. Always be certain to use a light hand when applying your eyeliner, as the area around the eyes is very sensitive and delicate.

- Put on your eyeliner only after you have already applied an eye shadow. Doing it before an eye shadow application would only cover the eyeliner.

- To achieve a dramatic and intense look, a kohl pencil with a color can be applied above as well as below the lashes, and then followed with black or very dark gray liquid eyeliner at the top. This will give the impression of dark eye lashes and will stay on for the whole day. A dark colored eye-liner will highlight the eyes form and outline as well as give them a deep look.

- While holding your head back facing the mirror, look down so that your eyelids will become tight making it easier in applying and controlling the liner. When necessary, smudge.

- The eyes will seem larger when you make a line with a pencil under your lower lashes – instead try a dark eye shadow applied with the help of a tiny makeup brush, to give an illusion of darker and fuller eye lashes. Below such line, you need to apply also a thin line with a lighter shade of eye shadow, preferably white, yellow or beige to brighten up your eye area.

- Pencil liners may be used on both above the top lashes as well as under the lower lashes. Liquid eye liners however, must only be applied on the top lid. Cake eyeliners are applied with water and may be put on to both the top and so too the bottom of the lid.

- If you have beautiful green eyes, try putting on a violet smoky pencil that will enhance your eyes, since basing from the color wheel, violet and green are opposite, so they will compliment each other.

- Refer to nature when you are in a process of deciding on a color. Green, beige and burnt orange are autumn colors.

- Others prefer using an eye liner not only for the eyes, but the lips as well. Should you decide on this, an eye lining pencil will be most suitable for the application. Make sure though, that you choose a certain shade of somewhat reddish brown or orangey-brown or a brownish plum, to compliment and flatter your lipstick.
